Early on in my entrepreneurial journey as a newly certified coach – I think the ink on my certificate may have still been wet, absolutely excited to apply all the training I had over the past year, and chomping-at-the-bit eager to get my business going – I dove in head first! I decided to attend a small women’s conference in my area. The room would be filled with women of all ages in different stages of their careers. This would be my golden opportunity to meet oodles of professionals struggling at work, ready for a new job or to make a career change. I came prepared with a stack of business cards to hand out to the dozens of women who would line up, anxious to meet me and beg to become one of my clients right then and there. I felt like a kid in a candy store; I could barely contain my enthusiasm!
I settled into my seat in the front row and chatted with some of the women around me. The presenter appeared and provided us with information about the day’s events and expectations. And then, IT happened. She said, “To get the most out of your experience and help you feel more relaxed, we encourage you all to get to know one another throughout the day. We’ve known some women who have gone on to be long-time friends. Some have even started businesses together.” That sounded right up my alley! Not so fast. She followed up with, “To help you get started, let’s go around the room and introduce ourselves. We’ll start with you here on the end. Would you be so kind to start us off?” Wait! What? Me? Noooo! She was pointing at me! You know that heavy, paralyzing sensation you get in your legs when you suddenly wake up from a nightmare? I felt every bit of that.
