The number of employee size in American businesses is shrinking and the yearly business mortality rate remains constant. Small businesses in the U.S. account for 99.7% of the economy, 60% of employment and 78% of new jobs. Yet, according to Jim Clifton, chief executive of Gallup, Inc., the U.S. economy has more business deaths per year than business births. Currently, there are six million companies with payroll and employees. Of those six million, about a million are “small businesses” with five to 10 employees. Unfortunately, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that about 20 percent of these “small businesses” will fail within their first year. By the end of their fifth year, roughly 50 percent will fail. And after 10 years, the survival rate drops to approximately 35 percent. To avoid business mortality and diminished profitability, a CEO needs to have a realistic business plan and a motivated team. Clearly, cracking the code to survival is even more relevant today if small businesses are going to grow, have success, and longevity.
